Using Implied Odds Effectively in Texas Holdem

A lot of players, even those new to the game, know the importance of implied odds, yet not everyone knows exactly what it means, let alone the other elements that need to be present for it to succeed. If you want to be successful in Texas Holdem, you will need to know these facts.

Implied odds basically refers to the amount of money that you can win in the subsequent betting levels of the hand. While pot odds concentrate on the value that you can win now, implied odds take into consideration the bets that other players will make later on if you hit your Texas Holdem hand.

Obviously there are a lot of factors that will affect the accuracy of this Texas Holdem strategy, and one of them are the chip stacks of the other players on the table.

As an example: you are holding low value suited connectors (76h). This combination will not win any hand regardless of what comes up in the flop, so if you are going to play it you will go all the way to the turn and likely the river. There you will want to make a straight or flush draw.

Because of this Texas Holdem strategy, you will bet quite a bit and of course will want the other to bet hard also. This is where the stack size can affect your implied odds. Simply put, the players with the bigger stacks are more likely to put more money in the pot.

Although determining what counts for big stacks will differ per table, in a No Limit Holdem game it is usually at least 100 times the size of the big blind.

Another factor that will come into play when using implied odds in Texas Holdem are the players themselves. Are they the type who will make a large bet? A lot of players with big stacks usually do, but of course there are always exceptions to the rule. If your flush draw appears on the river, will your opponents still make the bet?

These are just some of the elements that you will need to analyze when thinking about using implied odds in Texas Holdem. You cannot rely on the numbers or reading alone, but rather a combination of the two will be necessary. Include them in game plan, and you will often find yourself holding the pot by the end of the game.
